What is STEAM?

STEAM is a hands-on, project-oriented introductory engineering course for students. The class is a one-credit elective course designed to address national educational standards in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Our goal, together as a team, is to open your mind and gain knowledge in these fields, as well as develop your skills needed for the 21st Century. We will actively engage in solving real-world problems by using prior knowledge, scientific inquiry, content knowledge, and technological design. I ask that you enter with an open mind! The key to making this class successful is creativity, teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.

Your class work, homework, and projects are designed to help you understand a topic and to help me assess your progress. Due to this class focusing a lot on collaboration and working together, it is expected that YOU keep yourself focused, motivated, and a leader in the role you play in each project. I will guide you and assist you in the problem-solving process, but this class really focuses on your ideas and goals as a learner.

Each lesson, lab, or project will require you to do research, collaborate, design, and reflect. Please make sure to participate and be organized, as you will guide your learning. You will hear me speak of the 4 I’s in our class: Inquiry, Investigate, Interact, and Invent. In each lab or project, you will be assigned a role (team captain, recorder, materials manager, and monitor).

Journaling will also occur each class period. Scientists and researchers keep records. We will be journaling our processes to possibly go back to at a later time, reflect upon for further investigations, and possibly publishing this work. Each journal entry will be dated. This journal will be collected or checked throughout the year as part of the final grade.
