Info about Sports, School Events, and Graduation for Hopewell HS Students and Parents

THE STATUS

Currently, Governor Tom Wolf has closed schools in Pennsylvania indefinitely.

Beaver County School Districts, the Beaver County Career and Technology Center and the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit continue to work together as we receive guidance from our state and federal leaders.  Governor Wolf has announced that the shelter-at-home order is extended through April 30, 2020 for the Commonwealth and that PA schools will remain closed indefinitely.

Therefore, all Beaver County school facilities are closed and events are cancelled through and including Friday, May 1, 2020.  We fully expect this to continue through May but we are awaiting further information from the Governor.

We appreciate your patience and support during this closure and we will continue to provide updates as we move forward together.

SPORTS

WPIAL and PIAA have placed all athletics on hold at this point.  No decisions have been made about canceling season or spring championships.  PIAA will follow the guidance of Governor Wolf in deciding when or if high school sports may resume.  WPIAL is a member of the PIAA and must follow their lead.

Teams are not permitted to practice or hold drills.  All Hopewell High School facilities are closed including the stadium.  You are encouraged to work out on your own and you can reach out to your coaches if you need ideas for how to stay in shape.

Sports Letters - All student athletes currently on the spring roster for any team will receive a letter for their anticipated participation.  They will be distributed in the future.

PROM

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID19) precautionary measures must be taken to protect the safety of students and staff and to prevent community transmission of COVID19.  CDC staff and other health officials are recommending that large gatherings of people not occur to prevent the transmission of the disease.

For this reason, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the Hopewell High School prom scheduled for May 8, 2020.  This is the right thing to do to make this unpopular but safety driven decision.  We wanted to provide parents and students this information as early as possible to avoid unnecessary expenses related to dresses, suits, flowers, etc.  There are many parts to this decision including expenses related to the venue, clothes, tickets, meals, DJ, post prom events, etc.  The Hyatt also recommended that we follow the CDC guidelines on large group gatherings and cancel.

As principal, I am extremely saddened to share this information and to cancel what has always been a great celebratory event for our students!  If the opportunity should present to explore another option we could reconsider at that time.

OTHER SCHOOL EVENTS

May Day – currently working on a plan for virtual or online recognition of students for May Day.

All other school events cancelled at this time.  If we return to school we will consider options at that time.

KEYSTONE AND FINAL EXAMS

Cancelled – there will be NO FINAL EXAMS and NO KEYSTONE EXAMS…we can do them twice next year.  Laugh now, it was a joke!  This will not impact grades or academic advancement.

GRADUATION

No decision has been made regarding graduation ceremonies however there will be a graduation event!!!  We recognize and value the importance of this milestone event!

How, what, where, and when is still undecided and will depend on the conditions and health of Pennsylvania and our Nation.

We will provide a safe event when the time comes to recognize the Class of 2020!

Our goal now is to continue to instruct our students and get all of them to the end of the year and to pass on to the next grade, college, military, jobs and life!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Most importantly, stay safe, practice social distancing, stay away from others, and PROTECT YOURSELF, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY AND OTHERS.   That needs to be our focus now!
