HHS Good News

Our Hopewell High School Vikings continue to demonstrate their purpose, passion, and pride in many ways! We are proud of all of our Vikings!!! These are our highlights this month!

Teachers & Students

National Honor Society

NHS members are selected based on their accomplishments in the four Pillars of membership:

Scholarship

Students must first meet this criterion to become candidates for membership.

Service

This involves voluntary contributions made by a student and done without compensation. Chapters can require evidence of service to either the school, the community or both.

Leadership

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Chapters can require evidence of leadership from within school or the community or both.

Character

The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others. A chapter’s faculty council may review or consider disciplinary records when evaluating this criterion.

Academic Games

On April 22-24, 5 students from the SH and 3 from the JHS will be competing at the national level of Academic games. The students are Ethan Pletcher (competing in 6 games) Nate McGee (2 games) Ryan Vukovcan, Allison Honeywill, and Kylie Zito (each 4 games)

Career Fair

Hopewell HS Career Fair on 4/4. Juniors and Seniors got to listen to speakers about career options in the skilled trades and then got to meet with over 20 local employers, trade unions, and trade schools to learn about options available to them. Some of the employers in attendance included Range Resources, First Energy, Team Fishel, Heritage Valley, UPMC, Fed Ex, and several local trade unions.

On 4/19, all seniors participated in interview workshops facilitated by Job Training of Beaver County in their English classes. They learned about how to prepare for interviews, what questions they can expect, as well as a variety of other interview tips and strategies.

Zachary Kovell - NSLS

Zachary Kovell, grade 10, has been selected by the PIAA to attend the 2023 National Federation of High Schools Student Leadership Summit (NSLS) in Indianapolis on July 29-31, 2023. 12 students were selected from across PA to attend and all expenses are covered by the PIAA. Congrats to Zach – we hope he will come back and share his learnings with our student athletes.

Digital Media Arts Consortium

Hopewell Video Production and Journalism students competed in Robert Morris's annual DMAC (Digital Media Arts Consortium). Schools are able to submit one project in any of the 21 categories, which include videos, articles, and graphic design. Hopewell submitted 17 projects and earned 6 awards. Isabella Timpano won an Award of Excellence (essentially 2nd or 3rd place) for her feature article. Payton Rock won an Award of Excellence for her photoshop design, an Award of Excellence for her documentary, and a Best in Category Award for her commercial, which she co-created with Taylor Roberts. Taylor additionally won Best in Category for her feature photo. Aubryanna Snyder received a Founder's Award for her 4-year contributions to Hopewell's newspaper, morning announcements, and live events. It was a great day for Hopewell to shine amongst many much larger schools in the area: Seneca Valley, Erie McDowell, Shaler, Mount Lebanon, Greater Latrobe, Peters Township, Pine Richland, South Fayette, Penn Trafford, Freeport, Bentworth, and Leechburg made up Hopewell's Competition.

Athletics

Undefeated - Softball

Congrats to Girls Varsity Softball completed 1st half of season undefeated in section play and is currently ranked in WPIAL standings.

Track - Section Champtions

Both the Boys and Girls Track Teams are undefeated in their section.

Earth Day

On Saturday April 22 in honor of Earth Day the freshmen, academic history classes and members of AP Government organized and executed our annual service project at Hopewell Park.

This year 150 people participated in the event, donating approximately 750 hours of labor to our community. The students repaired and painted picnic tables; weeded, spread mulch and planted flowers throughout the park in the planter boxes; mulched the playground areas; mulched parts of the exercise trail; cleaned the concession stand; deep cleaned the LF Blaney Nature Center and library; removed deadfall from the trails, creek and hillside; removed winter debris from all parts of the park and buildings; made repairs to the duck boxes on the island; and removed trash in the park and along Laird Ave. The students also planted 7 trees and built a replacement bridge over a gully on the exercise trail.

This year's crews were extremely efficient and hard-working, completing their tasks well and finishing early to spite the rain. They enjoyed a hot dog lunch funded by the HEA (but cooked by the seniors) before going home wet, dirty, tired and proud of their accomplishments. A number of faculty members also volunteered at the event. However, as we do each year-the students lead and if they have a grown up in their team, we followed.

The Hopewell Community Park Board is very pleased with their efforts, and I am very proud of the work ethic these young people displayed. All-in-all- it was a great day to be a Viking!
